President’s Message Spring 2006

As we move to yet another year and another set of challenges, I take a moment to reflect on 2005.

2005 was certainly a year of accomplishment for MTC/ACF. Our efforts included National Child Hunger Awareness Day in Middle Tennessee, numerous fundraisers for American Parkinson’ Disease, American Red Cross, Relief for Hurricane Katrina victims, Camp for the Blind, Purity Dairy Ice Cream Competition, Crossover Lunch program, Chapter auction dinners and Legends Club Golf Tournament. We rewrote our chapter bylaws, represented our chapter at Regional and National conferences, while improving our communication through nashvillechefs.org and a new “Culinaire” format. We said goodbye to our esteemed colleague Ernie Lewis and hello to a dozen new members. We improved our educational format at chapter meetings and established guidelines to certification here at home. We honored our members with recognition and committed resolve to move forward by accepting host chapter of the Southeast Regional Conference in 2007.

We did all of this and more with the tremendous efforts of your board, chapter members and our supportive food service professional purveyors and brokers throughout Middle Tennessee. We are blessed as a chapter to have such dedication to bettering our organization.

As we move into the new year, I would like to begin by congratulating our nominees and our winners for 2005. Bill James Award ~ Nancy Campbell, Professionalism Award ~ Elaine Taubin and Rick Kahre, President’s Award ~ Kathy Hoorman, Hospitality Award ~ Gaylord Opryland and Hunters Lane High School, Junior Member of the Year ~ DeAngelo Bryant, Purveyor of the Year ~ Buckhead Beef and Chef of the Year ~ Rick Kahre.

My apologies to our Chef of the Year sponsor, US Foods, who did not receive due recognition as we got caught up in the excitement of the moment. US Foods has always played a major role of support for MTC/ACF.

The Southeast Regional conference in Savannah is upon us. Rick Kahre, Anna Hicks, and I will be in attendance to promote our Southeast Regional Conference in Nashville in 2007, taking notes and beginning the serious planning that will be required. Don’t be surprised if you receive a phone call from a board member requesting some volunteer hours. This is our time to shine, Nashville.

We will also be asking chefs, members or not, to participate with their talents and recipes for the “Flavors of Tennessee” exhibition cooking and competitions.

Election nominations for officers are just around the corner. Has it been two years already? If you would like to run for an officer’s position, get ready to throw your hat in the ring come March and April at our monthly chapter meeting.

Our next meeting will be at Centerstone, on March 20, at 6:00 p.m. Our host, Willie Jemison, is working diligently on an educational format and reception that will continue 2006 with flair and finesse. Continuing education certificates for certification credit will be available after the meeting.

Our thanks to Elaine Taubin, and Loews Vanderbilt Plaza for the February Meeting. And, here’s to a continued new year of success and fellowship with the MTC/ACF
